Free Knitting Pattern: Newport Wristlet

The Newport Wristlet knitting pattern is a fun, scrappy pattern I created to compliment my most popular crochet pattern - The Foxglove Wristlet. This wristlet knitting pattern uses a very simple cable pattern, which makes this a great, low-risk project for anybody who is new to cable knitting (it’s easier than it looks, I promise!).

Hello fiber friends! I am super excited to share my newest knitting pattern with you. I have been thinking of the best way to compliment my crochet wristlet pattern with a knitting pattern of similar quality, so I’m really stoked to introduce you to the Newport Wristlet! This wristlet keychain is a perfect quick project to make as gifts, for craft markets, or to accessorize your keys throughout the seasons.

The finished product of this pattern is a 5-inch long, 11-inch around, 1.5-inch wide knit wristlet keychain. This pattern is worked in back-and-forth rows using DK weight yarn. This pattern uses a cable knitting technique that is easy to follow, with i-cord edges. This is a great project to utilize any scrap DK yarns and knit a wristlet perfect for you.

How to knit your cables

Knitting cables CAN be easy! I frequently use this method when I am knitting projects with smaller cables and it is so easy and less intimidating than I thought it would be. For this cable knitting technique, I use a spare tapestry needle as my “cable needle” - but you could also use an actual cable needle, DPN, tooth pick, bobby pin… etc.

Each cable has two parts: C4B and C4F

Here are step by step photo instructions on how to knit C4B and C4F:

C4B

Slip 2 stitches onto your cable needle, and hold that cable needle in the back of your work. Knit the next 2 stitches on your left needle. Pick up the cable needle and knit the 2 stitches on the cable needle.

C4F

Slip 2 stitches onto your cable needle, and hold that cable needle in the front of your work. Knit the next 2 stitches on your left needle. Pick up the cable needle and knit the 2 stitches on the cable needle.

Instructions

Knitting your wristlet

To start, cast on 14 stitches using your preferred cast on method.

Row 1: Knit until the last 3 stitches, sl 3 wyif.

Row 2: K3, p until the last 3 stitches, sl 3 wyif.

Row 3: K3, C4B, C4F, sl 3 wyif.

Row 4: K3, p until the last 3 stitches, sl 3 wyif.

Row 5: K until the last 3 stitches, sl 3 wyif.

Row 6: K3, p until the last 3 stitches, sl 3 wyif.

Repeat rows 3-6 until your work measures 11 inches (or desired length) ending after you complete a row 5.

Bind off, leaving a 10 inch tail (we will use this to sew the ends together).

Assembling your wristlet

Now that you have finished knitting your wristlet, it’s time to assemble.

Slip your key ring onto your finished piece.

Take your finished piece and fold in half lengthwise with the right sides touching. Using your long bind-off tail, sew the two ends together. Fasten off and weave in the ends. Turn your wristlet inside out so that the right side faces out.

And there you have it! You are ready to show off your new Newport Wristlet!
